Charles A. Jewell (Chuck) was born Sept. 25, 1912 in Abingdon, Ill. He was the youngest of four children born to Reuben and Nellie (Gast) Jewell. He grew up in Southwest Michigan, mostly in Benton Harbor. He was married to Kathryn Barr of St. Joseph and together they had two children, Steve and Kathy. Chuck was a member of the Navy, serving in World War II in the Pacific Theater and during the Korean Conflict, when he was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Center, Ill. He was a chief petty officer.
Chuck sold shoes, appliances and operated a gas station before founding an industrial supply business, Manufacturers Rubber Supply, in Benton Harbor in 1953. He later moved MRS to St. Joseph. He sold the business and retired in 1975.
Chuck liked sports and outdoor activities, especially fishing and boating. He was fond of dogs. After his retirement, he and Kay traveled to Hawaii, Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean.
Joe Jewell, Elizabeth Jewell, Jayme Myers and Ben (Claire) Myers are Chuck's grandchildren. His great-granddaughter is Phoenix.
Chuck died November 15, 2009 at CrownPointe Senior Living Community in Stevensville.
